- The number of for-hire vehicles licensed by TLC increased 54% between 1992
and 2000, then declined by 13% between 2000 and 2004, squeezed by the recession
and rising insurance costs.

Car service vehicles contracted most rapidly between 2000 and 2004 (17%),
while the number
of black cars fell by 10% and the number of limousines (or vehicles classified as
limousines) increased by 17%.

Between 1992 and 2000, the number of car service vehicles increased most
rapidly in Manhattan (85%) and Brooklyn (79%), while increasing by 50% in Queens,
20% in the Bronx and 11% on Staten Island.

Since 2000, the number of car service vehicles declined by just over 20% in
Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island and by 12-14% in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
